Hi, Dave here. Well here we are at the turn of the year. From a hobby standpoint, 2016 was a ton of fun for me as I reconnected with modeling and painting minis (and not-so-minis) for the first time in about 25 years. Joyful and fulfilling in a way that I was not expecting. Thanks to everyone who has been a part of my hobby journey this year. The support, encouragement and inspiration mean a lot to me.
2017 is going to be busy; I’m starting a new job next week which promises to demand a lot of my waking hours. 2016 was pretty full-on too what with shipping a massive game in October and all the long hours and mental energy that goes into that. I ended up over-committing to the hobby (I cannot turn off the ideas faucet when it comes to 40k) and actually finishing very little.
So 2017 is going to be a much more focused affair. I’m going to try and hobby by one simple rule:
I have more than enough plans in the mental hopper to keep me busy full time for a year, but I’m going to commit to 3 projects. These are highest priority, and while I can’t promise I won’t get distracted, I HAVE to finish these in 2017. They are:
- The Hound of Zamarkande – I want to fully finish my Cult Stochastic Warhound Titan; modelling, painting and basing. It’s all figured out, I just need to do the work.
- Truescale Deathwatch Kill Team – 5 characters plus a dreadnought and a flyer: conversion work on everything, all painted and based. Some fluff to work through choosing the rest of the cast though!
- Dreadtober. I have my idea for this year’s entry and I’m super excited about it. Come September I’ll focus on the lore and fluff for this and do some design sketches ahead of the main event.
There’s one more goal I have: I’m going to keep a design journal of sketches, fluff and conversion ideas; in lieu of spending time building out concepts for all the ideas that flit into my head I can quickly draw them out. I’m well rusty, so this will help blow the cobwebs off my drawing skills. Plus it’s a great excuse to go shopping for a suitable baroque and grim looking sketchbook!
There you have it: my 2017 commitments. I’m looking forward to another year of being part of a wonderful community of hobby fanatics. Good luck to everyone. I can’t wait to see what we make this year.
